The parent or guardian, adult child, or spouse will have to contact the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for a sample letter. Once you have obtained that sample letter contact the department of the
deceased law enforcement personnel to obtain a letter on department letter head.

Surviving Spouse and Dependent Children

EDUCATION BENEFIT FOR CERTAIN SURVIVORS
(a) A person is eligible to receive education benefits under this section if the person is:
(1) a Surviving Spouse; or (2) a surviving child, if the child was claimed as a dependent on the income tax
return filed with the Internal Revenue Service by the listed individual in the year preceding the year in which the listed individual died.
(b) An eligible person who enrolls as a full-time student at an
institution of higher education as defined by Section 61.003, Education Code, is exempt from tuition and fees at that institution of higher education until the student receives a bachelor's degree or 200 hours
of course credit, whichever occurs first.
(c) If the student elects to reside in housing provided by the institution of higher education and qualifies to reside in that housing, the institution shall pay from
the general revenue appropriated to the institution the cost of the student's contract for food and housing until the student receives a bachelor's degree or 200 hours of course credit, whichever occurs
first. If there is no space available in the institution's housing, the institution shall, from the general revenue appropriated to the institution, pay to the student each month the equivalent amount that the
institution would have expended had the student lived in the institution's housing. The institution is not required to pay the student the monthly payment if the student would not qualify to live in the
institution's housing.
(d) The institution of higher education shall, from the general revenue appropriated to the institution, pay to the student the cost of the student's textbooks until the student
receives a bachelor's degree or 200 hours of course credit, whichever occurs first.
The public safety officer must have died in the performance of his/her duty on or after September 1, 2000.

Exemption of Children of Peace Officers, county, custodial employees of Texas Department of Corrections, or Game Warden
killed in the line of duty.
MUST APPLY FOR EXEMPTION BEFORE 21 YEARS OF AGE
A person is not entitled to the exemption if the person:
(1) does not apply initially for the exemption before the date the person:
(a) becomes 21 years of age, if the person is not covered by paragraph (b); or (b) becomes 22 years of age, if the person is
eligible to participate in a school district's special education program under Section 29.003;
(2) does not meet all entrance requirements of the institution; or
(3) does not maintain a scholastic average sufficient to remain in good standing.
(d) a person may receive an exemption only for the first 120 undergraduate semester credit hours for which the person
registers.
(e) a person is not entitled to an exemption for any term or semester the person begins after the date the person becomes 26 years of age.

COPS Scholarship Program
COPS scholarships provide financial assistance to surviving children under the age of 30 and effective Winter/Spring 2002-2003 all surviving children regardless of
age and to all surviving spouses of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, according to Federal government criteria, who wish to pursue a course of study beyond high school. Scholarships are not
awarded for post-graduate study. Scholarships are not awarded to survivors who are entitled to a tuition-free education as a state death benefit.
Applicants seeking financial assistance for education purposes
are limited to the receipt of not more than $1,500 per semester, and total scholarship awards shall not exceed $12,000 maximum lifetime.
COPS scholarships are awarded three times annually; Fall/Winter
semester (begins late August or early September), Winter/Spring semester (begins late December or early January), and Summer semester (begins May or June). A completed application is required for consideration for
each semester, and the awarding of a scholarship for any one semester does not guarantee a scholarship for any future semesters.
June 15: Postmark deadline for Fall/Winter Semester Scholarships.
October 31: Postmark deadline for Winter/Spring Semester Scholarships. April 15: Postmark deadline for Summer Semester Scholarships.
Scholarship recipients are determined by an independent Scholarship
Committee drawn from the outside community and comprised of persons knowledgeable about education and the law enforcement profession. The National Board of COPS determines the amount of funding that will be set
aside for educational scholarships each year.
Scholarships are paid directly to the institution of higher learning on behalf of the scholarship recipient and may be expended for tuition, required texts, and
associated fees (not room and board charges). Any unused amount is returned to COPS.

Don Manning Scholarship Foundation, Inc.
Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex Area
The Don Manning Scholarship Foundation was founded by the family of FTW Det. Don Manning after his tragic death in June of 1993. The Foundations purpose is to raise
funds for the education of a son or daughter of a police officer. Scholarships will be open to all law enforcement agencies in the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, fees, and
books from an accredited college, university, trade, or vocational school. An annual golf tournament is held to raise funds for scholarships.

Educational Aid for Dependent Children
Under Section 54.204 of the Higher Education Code for the State of Texas, dependent children of a peace officer having suffered an injury in the line of duty resulting in disability or death are exempt from all dues, fees, and charges at any public junior or senior college in the State of Texas. Upon documentation of this exemption, the Fleetwood Memorial Foundation can provide financial assistance for housing, and other needs based on funds available. This assistance will be affected by the student's academic performance.

Assistance for Disabled Peace Officers
EXEMPTION FOR PEACE OFFICERS DISABLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Section 54.2041, Texas Education Code, Effective June 17, 1997
Requirements for benefit:
Are Texas residents Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost).
A person may not receive an
exemption under this section if the person is enrolled in a master's degree program or is attending postgraduate courses to meet the requirements of a master's degree program and the person has previously
received a master's degree and received an exemption under this section for a semester or session while attending a postgraduate course to meet the requirements of the master's degree program. A person
may not receive an exemption under this section if the person is enrolled in a doctoral degree program or is attending postgraduate courses to meet the requirements of a doctoral degree program and the person has
previously received a doctoral degree and received an exemption under this section for a semester or session while attending a postgraduate course to meet the requirements of the doctoral degree program. A person
may not receive an exemption under this section for more than 12 semesters or sessions while the person is enrolled in an undergraduate program or while the person is attending only undergraduate courses.
Must be used at a Texas institution Available only for use at a public college or university.
The maximum award is exemption from the payment of tuition and required fees for not more than 12 semesters or

FLEETWOOD MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
RETRAINING OR REHABILITATION FOR PEACE OFFICERS
Educational aid is available for the retraining or
rehabilitation of injured personnel if unable to return to their previous job. The injury must have been in the "line of duty". Training costs cannot exceed the cost of in-state books and tuition at a
State or County institute of higher learning in the State of Texas. The recipient must proceed on a degree path and after the first semester will be paid by the hours passed the previous semester. There will be no
payment for non grade-point hours, and room and board will be based on funds as available.

Jeanne E. Bray Memorial Awards Program
Scholarship Awards Program
Named for the late Columbus, Ohio, police officer shooting champion, and NRA Director, this program offers college scholarships of up to $1,000 per semester (up to
$2,000 per year for a maximum of four years) to any dependent children of any public law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty who was an NRA member at the time of death, and to dependent children of any
current or retired law enforcement officers who are living and have current NRA membership. Deadline for application is November 15 annually.

Peace Officers Memorial Foundation, Inc.
POMF Scholarships
The Scholarship Program of the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation, Inc. and the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, Inc. (CLEAT) was developed from their
strong sense of commitment to individual communities, and the CLEAT members who serve those communities. The requirements for application include:
1. The applicant's parent or guardian must be a member in
good standing of CLEAT at the time of application for scholarship. 2. Letter of Recommendation from active CLEAT member. 3. Recipient must be a full-time student at the time of enrollment, taking at least 12
hours of college credit upon enrollment, or planning to be a full-time student at time of enrollment. (Class schedule or acceptance letter must be included with application.) 4. Attendance must be at an
accredited junior college, community college or four-year college or university in the State of Texas. 5. The student must be a Texas resident.
6. Scholarship funds limited to 2 per region, in the amount of $500 each. 7. Photo to be enclosed with application.

Texas Municipal Police Association Auxiliary
TMPA Auxiliary Scholarship Program
Who is Eligible?
Must be a child or dependent child of a TMPA member. Must show proof of enrollment for a minimum of twelve hours of college credit at an
accredited college, university, or vocational school prior to receiving scholarship payment. Must not have been convicted of a crime. Must be under 25 years of age.
Selection Process
Scholarships
will be awarded by a committee of the TMPAA at the annual Summer board meeting. All applications will be submitted to the Selection Committee anonymously.
Selection Criteria
Must have graduated from High School or obtained a GED Demonstrated scholastic ability-high school lowest grade point average of a "B" (85 or higher or a GED score of 58 or higher) SAT Scores
Awards and Honors Extracurricular activities and/or work history Statement expressing education and career goals and plans
"When & How Many Times Can I Apply?"
You may apply as many times as possible while you are still eligible. The TMPAA Scholarship can be awarded to the same individual a maximum of four times TMPAA encourages all interested to both apply and
reapply if previously accepted or not.
Scholarship recipients will be notified by mail and payment will be made to the student after proof of enrollment is received by the committee.

The Sheriffs' Association of Texas
SAT SCHOLARSHIPS
The Sheriffs' Association of Texas offers scholarships to eligible students pursuing an academic degree at a college or university. In addition to the
Sheriffs' Association of Texas scholarships several others are made available through the generosity of individuals or other organizations. These funds are managed by the Sheriffs' Association of Texas for
award to qualified students. The scholarships are awarded in the Spring and Fall each year.
Instruction for Applicants
Applications must be submitted on the Sheriffs' Association of Texas
Application for Scholarship Form with all supporting information attached. Applications must be received in the Sheriffs' Association of Texas office by March 1st each year for the Spring Semester and by
October 15th for the Fall Semester. Only one application may be submitted for the Spring Semester and one for the Fall Semester. A new application may be submitted with current supporting information for each
consideration. Applicants are only eligible to receive two scholarship awards.
Sheriffs' Association of Texas Requirements
1. Must be enrolled in a College or University in an academic course of study 2. Must be less than 25 years of age at time of application. 3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.
4. Must have completed at least one semester of college. 5. Must be enrolled as a full time student during the semester the application is submitted. The general rule will be for 12 semester hours
undergraduate, 9 semester hours for graduate students. 6. Must not have been convicted of a crime which would make an individual ineligible for employment in his/her field of study.
7. Must submit with application a brief biographical sketch and narrative, written in the applicant's own words, stating why the applicant believes he/she is deserving of a
scholarship award. May include personal accomplishments, activities and experiences and may not exceed two (2) typewritten, double spaced pages in length.
